BSidesDFW 2017

Security B-Sides Dallas/Fort Worth (BSidesDFW) is back for it's 8th year.

We have been busy re-organizing and structuring ourselves as a corporation (non-profit pending).  With that said it is time to get on it and bring you the best un-conference possible. As usual we are striving to provide an awesome one day experience in a local low cost alternative for the security curious hobbyists, enthusiasts, practitioners, and researchers.

PRE-CON TRAINING:

When:  03 Nov 2017

Where: Cambria Hotel & Suites Plano-Frisco

Cost: $150 each

We have partnered with CyberDefenses, Inc. to bring some additional pre-conference training.

Two classes are being offered.  Each is $150 and limited to about 20 seats.

Footprinting & Fingerprinting: 8am-12pm

Footprinting is the technique of following a physical, digital or social trail. Footprinting gathers high-level information about a group, organization or entity and is more macro in nature. Fingerprinting is uniquely identifying a user, machine or entity and is micro in nature. The two techniques are used interactively to collect information on a target. Adversaries employ these techniques to understand their targets. Defenders do so to understand their threat surface. The techniques highlight weaknesses and signal what information is at risk from being in business. Intelligence analysts look at adversaries and their targets to derive the same information.

Metrics for Threat Intelligence: 1pm-5pm

Talking about metrics almost universally invokes a groan of frustration. We’ve all been subjected to the call for metrics and felt its pain. The thinking goes something like this, "We need a number to measure how we’re doing. Numbers focus people and help us measure success." It's a well-intentioned thought but you can’t manage solely by numbers. Metrics aren’t inherently bad — they are just inappropriately used. Threat Intelligence is not isolated in this regard but the lack of clarity it Threat Intelligence is and what value it provides make the misapplication of metrics even more glaring.
